While Gorillaz’s Demon Days might still be on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart 13 years after its release, The Chainsmokers’ debut album, Memories…Do Not Open is poised to take the Dance Chart bronze, for third longest at No. 1. Both albums have managed 34 weeks, but The Chainsmokers, who have spent the past year repeatedly reclaiming their crown from different challengers, look likely to be the long-term winner.
Despite the fact that Memories…Do Not Open was released a year ago, it is still holding strong. The first Chainsmokers album held first place on the Dance Chart for more than half the year, despite new releases from Above & Beyond, Kygo, Odesza, and William Control temporarily taking the stage as they had their debuts at No. 1. After Avicii’s death, the Swedish EDM musician claimed the top spot, and even Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 by Calvin Harris held court for a little while and controlled the Top Dance/Electronic list for many months more.
The EDM-pop team up of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart has proven to be an exceptional one, claiming five Top 10 Hits of their 13 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100. All three of their EPs peaked within the top three of the Top Dance/Electronic Albums listing, with Collage taking the No. 1 crown for a time as well.
2018 has brought both changes and victories for The Chainsmokers. They claimed Billboard’s number one space in the 2018 rankings for the Billboard Dance 100, and updated their logo for the second time as well. The DJ/production duo initially stood firm against releasing an album in 2016, preferring to focus on EPs. They eventually relented, much to the delight of their fans, including the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Over the last 24 months, Chainsmokers, (an electronic group) has made headlines in the music scene. Made up of the talented (Andrew Taggart) producer and the music DJ and creator Alex Pall, the group has revolutionized the EDM-pop scene. From the 2014 magical sound entitled #selfie, the consistency in this group by many standards has been phenomenal. Chainsmokers have given fans of EDM-pop experimental but beautiful songs such as Closer (with the lovely artist, Halsey).
Alex Pall journey to the legendary band is an interesting one. Many bands have different stories on how they met but for Chainsmokers, the meeting story was highly inspired by their love for music. Although Alex Pall and his partner have a different musical talents (the latter being a producer) they have used this diversity to break through the competitive dance music scene. According to the duo, music to them is an ever-learning journey and being good students has been of great help to them.
Although Alex Pall admits that the main music genre they are famous for is dance music, being experimental in their Spotify playlists makes them incomparable. By diversifying, they have been able to create music that is relatable and fun to listen. For example, their songs (such as Roses and waterbed) do not have a specific genre. The songs have a lot of influence from pop, hip-hop, and indie.
Their creativity journey is by many standards unique. Alex Pall explains that the reason why the group is inclined to singing their own records (as opposed to the tradition in the EDM-pop scene) is to personalize their projects. Unlike the main acts such as Avicii that never sang on their own records, the group has been singing on their own song for years. To him, this has helped the group to personalize their project and give a clear personal touch.
Alex Pall points out that from the reaction and the love the fans have shown them is fulfilling. Chainsmokers as a group is now reaching more people especially young people in their late teens and the early twenties. Their use of musical platforms such as Spotify and SoundCloud according to him has helped them reach more audience.
